Service learning is a pedagogical approach that integrates classroom knowledge with community service. This integration allows learners to better understand classroom concepts which teaching civic responsibility. It also strengthens communities and builds bridges between the college and the community.
Service learning may be connected directly with a course, which would be co-curricular service learning, or it may be outside a class, such as with a student club or organization (extra curricular).
For more information about service learning, see the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse.
